Motion TitleFunding for Musical Instruments (Revised Wording)

Motion TextThat this Assembly notes the cultural, artistic and community importance of bands in Northern Ireland; recognises the importance of the Musical Instruments for Bands funding programme; expresses its disappointment at the failure of the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure to fund the programme this year; and calls on the Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure to restore the funding for the programme.

04/06/2015	Proposed: Leave out all after ‘Assembly’ and insert: ‘notes the different cultural, artistic and community role of bands in Northern Ireland; recognises the contribution of the Musical Instruments for Bands funding programme; further notes that restrictions on public spending are a result of the most severe austerity budget since 2011; acknowledges that there are positive contributions by many bands but recognises the financial and operational strain on the PSNI as a result of public order policing related to parades and associated protests; calls on the Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure, that in the event that the Musical Instruments for Bands funding is restored, to amend the criteria for awards under the programme to introduce a requirement to abide by Parades Commission determinations; and further calls on the Minister to work with her Executive colleagues to introduce a comprehensive code of conduct for all groups involved in parading and associated protests that sets a high standard of accountability for individuals and groups, enforceable through the courts.’
